Shirley and her friend Marianne, two working-class prairie women, choose levity despite lives populated by poverty, violence, addictions and mental illness. They were neighbours for years but they only became friends after both of their husbands died. Suddenly alone, they got together and decided to take off on a road trip. Their families have christened them Thelma & Louise. But their friendship offers an alternate ending to the film from which they derive their nicknames.
